Dental Crowns FAQs

What Is a Dental Crown?

Person holding a dental crown

Dental crowns are one of the most popular and effective restorative treatments. A crown is a custom-made covering that fits over a tooth that is decayed, damaged, or cracked. Today, metal-free materials such as ceramic or porcelain can be customized to blend in with the rest of your smile.

The most common reason to place a crown is decay too extensive for a filling. Crowns may also be used for cracked, chipped, or injured teeth, to cover a dental implant, or to protect a tooth after root canal treatment.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

Your journey starts with a consultation and oral examination. If a crown is needed, we’ll explain the process before beginning treatment.

We remove a thin layer of enamel, take an impression for the dental laboratory, and place a temporary crown while the final restoration is created. When your permanent crown arrives, we remove the temporary restoration, place the final crown, and explain how to care for it.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

The primary benefit of dental crowns is restoring a tooth to full function. Without a crown’s protection, a tooth could continue to be exposed to damage until extraction is necessary.

Crowns can also improve your bite by evening it out. Untreated uneven bites can place stress on jaw joints, accelerate enamel wear, and increase the risk of cavities and sensitivity.

Factors That Affect the Cost of Dental Crowns

Your costs depend on the severity of damage, any additional care needed such as root canal treatment, the material used, and how the crown is made.

Does Dental Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

Many dental insurance policies reimburse about 50% of the total cost, but every plan is different. Our staff can help you maximize available benefits.

Options for Making Dental Crowns Affordable

CareCredit and Wells Fargo financing can make it possible to divide payments into more affordable monthly installments. Contact us if you need help with the application.

I have been a patient with Dr Nawrocki since 2019. I am a very complicated case and have always received the ultimate in professional dental care. The office is very competent and helpful with appointments and insurance needs. I trust in my Dr and respect his expertise and knowledge. As a Nurse myself I need to know I am getting the best care for my dental health, and I surely found it in Brown and Nawrocki. I cannot thank Dr. Nawrocki enough for everything he has helped me with.
